Family Friendly Adventures in Savannah, GA

Often when one thinks of visiting Savannah, Ga they think of it as a couple’s vacation or as a friend’s trip getaway. But Savannah has become one of the best destinations in the Southeast for family trips over the past 10 years. This transformation has created multiple attractions for families to enjoy while staying in historic downtown Savannah and surrounding areas.  With plenty of new family friendly activities in downtown Savannah, you and your family will have to play rock, paper, scissors to decide what to do!

A favorite places for families to explore with children (ages 18 months-12 years) is the Savannah Children’s Museum. Two fun floors of kids activities that will have them using their imaginations and receiting fun facts. What’s even better about going to the Children’s Museum is that it’s located right next to the Georgia State Railroad Museum. The railroad museum is a fantastic train museum. Not only will you find antebellum and model trains, you will encounter a working roundhouse with an old fashioned repair shop. Children are invited to play inside an old baggage railway car that has been transformed into a children’s play area.

Another favorite family favorite is to go to the University of Georgia’s Aquarium, which is located on Skidaway Island. This small aquarium is packed with educational opportunities for children of all ages to explore. Children can view the beautiful aquariums in addition to having a hands-on learning experience with the touch tanks. While visiting this venue, your family can also take advantage of the walking trail. This trail is a great change of scenery and is short, so no need to worry about anyone getting tired from a long hike.

While on Skidaway Island, another hidden favorite you must go to is the Skidaway Island State Park. You will find a nature center(which often has activities planned for children, especially in the summer), picturesque trails, and three different playgrounds for kids to play on and explore. If you are a fitness buff, be sure to take advantage of the outdoor gym, which is equipped with a rowing machine and weight lifting equipment. If you’re interested in an even larger adventure, you can even go camping at the Skidaway Island State Park for very affordable rates.

On your way into Skidaway Island, stop at a small hidden historical gem; Pin Point Heritage Museum. At the Pin Point Heritage, your family will learn all about the Gullah/Gee Chee culture, the history of the freed slaves as well as, the crabbing and oyster factory that helped to support many generations.

Now, don’t forget to plan a fun day at the beach when you visit Savannah. Tybee Island has one of the best beaches for all ages to enjoy. When you’re on Tybee Island don’t forget to stop along the boardwalk to visit the fun shops and restaurants. If your family likes to fish, you can fish off the pier. After swimming, eating and shopping on Tybee, head over to one Tybee Islands dolphin tours. Going on the dolphin boat tour, you will not only see the beautiful dolphins swimming and jumping in the water, but you will also see the beautiful Savannah coast and lighthouse. Going before dusk or early is the morning always seems to be the perfect Instagram moments.
